Abstract

Personhood is an intersubjective phenomenon, meaning the experience of being a human being happens in the collective, not in isolation or individually. Person- hood and who we develop into over the course of a lifetime has much to do with the relationships and groups that are a part of our lives. (Wo)man needs other humans to survive and to flourish. We cannot be human without other people, but it is not simply a matter of having relationships in our lives. Relationships provide a formative basis for personhood and for creating who we are. We are changed and altered with each additional relationship in our lives, and this is the essence of the life journey.
