Abstract

This autoethnographic study explores the transformative journey of rethinking pedagogical practices through the lens of critical and spiritual pedagogy on behalf of a larger project for social justice. Drawing from Paulo Freire’s foundational work on critical pedagogy, alongside the insights of Zenju Manuel on decolonization and Yitzhak Bentov’s spiritual frameworks, this research examines how personal storytelling, and reflective practices can foster educational transformation. Embedded within traditional educational settings, I critically reflect on how empathy, both as a cognitive and affective process, catalyzed change in my pedagogical approach and challenged colonial legacies within the classroom. The study situates itself within the context of social justice education, focusing on how empathy driven pedagogies can bridge cultural divides, dismantle power dynamics, and cultivate solidarity among learners. This research is framed by the idea that spiritual pedagogy, as articulated by Manuel and Bentov, plays a crucial role in the human evolution of consciousness and education. By examining key moments in my own professional journey—such as curriculum design, collaborative teaching practices, and engagement with diverse perspectives that I experienced—I illustrate how empathy and care can serve as tools for decolonizing education. Central to this study is the notion that by fostering critical consciousness and nurturing relationality, educators can empower students to actively engage in confronting systemic injustices. Ultimately, this autoethnography contributes to the scholarly discourse in education by providing insights into how pedagogies enriched by empathy, spirituality and care can support human evolution, cultivate awareness and promote social justice in educational contexts.
